The International Union of Soil Science (IUSS), which SBCS is affiliated, defined the theme “Healthy Soils for Humanity” for the celebrations of the soil science decade for sustainable development | 2025–2034.

The goal is to promote the importance of healthy soils for food security, climate change mitigation, biodiversity conservation and the well-being of humanity.

By stating that healthy soils support Iuss healthy societies, it argues that soil health is included in all areas of sustainability research. “Societies depend, for their sustainability, healthy and properly functioning soil ecosystems, which can sustain biodiversity and air and water quality. Soil provides essential ecosystem services, such as flood control and erosion, regulation of pests and diseases, mitigation of climate change, residue recycling, water purification, biodiversity support, heritage preservation preservation of heritage.
