Brazilian researchers will travel across the country to collect thousands of soil and vegetation samples at approximately 6,500 locations, with the goal of quantifying, for the first time, carbon stocks across all Brazilian biomes. The initiative will generate an unprecedented and strategic database to advance soil science and strengthen Brazil’s role in the carbon market.

In addition to enabling more accurate assessments of carbon losses and gains, the project highlights the importance of soil as an essential component in addressing climate change — an agenda strongly supported by the Brazilian Soil Science Society, which works to promote scientific knowledge and strengthen sustainable policies in the country.
