Despite their name, the so-called rare earth elements (REEs) are not actually scarce and can be found in various rocks and soils around the world, including in Pernambuco, Brazil. In an article published in the Jornal do Comércio de Pernambuco (JC-PE), Professor Clístenes Nascimento, from the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco (UFRPE), explains what these elements are, their strategic importance for the future of Brazil and the world, and highlights the research carried out by the Soil Environmental Chemistry Research Group at UFRPE on the occurrence of REEs in Pernambuco soils.
