From September 16 to 20, the Northeastern Regional Branch of the SBCS held the VIII Northeastern Soil Science Meeting in Arapiraca, Alagoas. The event was organized by the Postgraduate Programme in Agriculture and the Environment/UFAL, IFAL and UNEAL, in partnership with various public and private institutions in the state of Alagoas and chaired by UFAL professor Cícero Gomes dos Santos. The organizers registered the presentation of 471 scientific papers.

To discuss solutions for sustainable production in the Northeast, the organizers invited experts from the region, from other places and also producers who exchanged impressions and information with the researchers on the main challenges of production in the Agreste.

The VIII Northeastern Soil Science Meeting also invited and welcomed high school and elementary school students to stand and give lectures on the importance of healthy soils for sustaining life.

The president of the SBCS, Maria Eugênia Escobar, highlights the example of the Northeast Regional Nucleus in encouraging the decentralization of events promoted by the SBCS. Arapiraca is the second largest city in Alagoas, hosts a campus of the Federal University of Alagoas and is an important agricultural center in the northeastern agreste that needs attention to the region’s soils, especially with the advance of desertification.
