Brazilian soil science has lost, on January 19, Elke Jurandy Bran Nogueira Cardoso, senior researcher and teacher in Soil Microbiology at the Department of Soil Science of the Luiz de Queiroz Higher School of Agriculture at the University of São Paulo (ESALQ/USP) and a great encouragement from the Brazilian Soil Science Society (SBCS), of which she was an active partner throughout her academic life.
Considered one of the 100 most influential scientists in Latin America by Ad Scientific Index Agency – USA, Professor Elke should be revered as one of the pioneers in soil microbiology studies from the 1960s, and one of the first women to work in soil science, paving the way for many others. His work on the benefits of soil microbiology and its direct relationship with the productivity and sustainability of long -term agricultural productions also make it a reference in agroecology.
Throughout his career, Elke Cardoso has formed more than 100 researchers in postgraduate and specialization programs. He published more than 170 scientific articles, 13 books and 30 book chapters. In addition to being a senior soil microbiology holder at ESALQ/USP, she was also a professor at the Ecosystems Postgraduate Program in Ecosystems at Vila Velha University Center-ES
SBCS Praise and thanks Professor Elke’s dedication to Brazilian Soil Science and sympathizes with his family, friends and students.
To get to know the work and ideas of Professor Elke, we highlight here an interview given by her to the project Memory of Esalq/USP, in 2020.
