Embrapa Soja researcher and former president of the Brazilian Soil Science Society (SBCS), Mariângela Hungary, will be the new representative of the Latin America and Caribbean macroregion (LAC) in the Intergovernmental Technical Panel on Soils (ITPs). The panel, created in 2013 by the United Nations (UN), brings together 27 soil experts from around the world and has the mission of supporting the actions of Global Soil Partnership (FAO/GSP).
Only five researchers make up the lac macroregion. Brazil has been represented at ITPS since its beginning by three women: researcher Maria de Lourdes Mendonça Brefin (Embrapa Soils) between 2013 and 2018; Professor Lúcia Anjos (UFRRJ), between 2018 and 2025 and now with the researcher Mariângela Hungary, with a mandate until 2028.
Mariângela Hungary’s nomination was confirmed on June 3 at the 13th Plenary Assembly of Global Soil Partnership, which brings together all partners and representations of UN member countries. Its name was nominated at the initiative of the Brazilian Society of Soil Science and Embrapa, with the support of various educational and research institutions in Brazil.
Commenting on his nomination, Mariângela Hungary said she was very honored and expects to represent Brazilian science well and SBCs in ITPS. “I think we are a model that research that validates technologies aimed at improving soils and we can be a reference to the world, as well as learning from other representatives,” said the researcher. Member of the Brazilian Academy of Science, Mariângela Hungary became, in May this year, the first Brazilian woman to receive the World Food Prize, the largest international awards dedicated to food and agriculture science.
