What makes a cacao tree produce more than 2,700 kg/ha?

In southern Bahia, the renewal of old orchards is the key to the future of cocoa farming. But a recent study published in the Brazilian Journal of Soil Science (RBCS) reveals that success depends not only on plant genetics, but also on the soil’s physical “architecture.”

Researchers analyzed 15 areas undergoing renewal and found that soil physics dictates the pace of the harvest. The results are clear: soils with high silt content and a high silt/clay ratio showed lower productivity. Why? They tend to be more compact and retain less available water.

High penetration resistance in the surface layers (compaction) limits root growth and nutrient uptake.

The highest yields (G1 Group) were found in soils with balanced textures (sandy-clayey), which provide better aeration and water storage.

Understanding these physical attributes makes it possible to choose the best areas for renewal, ensuring more productive and resilient crops in the face of climate change.
